Apparatus: Build Amazing Machines To Perform Simple Tasks In This Brain Puzzler [Android]

    ">

    January 22, 2013

    By Saikat Basu

apparatus for androidIf you have ever played with LEGO or a Meccano set and have loved the brain-stimulating challenge, then Apparatus for Android is right up your alley. Apparatus is a game of logic and creativity. When you combine both these two, you can be sure that it’s also a game that’s a sure shot booster for all the blank moments we start to have with age.

Apparatus enjoys a 4.6 average user rating on the Google Play store. But more than that, I often take a peek at the reviews to see what others are saying about it before I let go of my dimes. Fun, creative, addictive, challenging, and amazing are some of the words thrown around. Words are words, so let’s see if this Android game walks the talk and make your creative cells spark up.

A Brief Guide To Apparatus For Android

Apparatus relies on physics or more pointedly – classical mechanics. If you have ever heard about Rube Goldberg and his gadgets, you will get the point of this game in a pat. You have to build simple to complex mechanical structures to achieve a simple task. The simple task is putting a blue marble (or a few) into a blue goal.

But between the blue marble and the blue goal lies the challenge of taking all the contraptions (planks, weights, pulleys, hammer, nails etc.) presented to you in each level and logically putting them together so that you can move the blue ball towards the goal. And at every point of the puzzle game, you have to follow the laws of physics. So that means nailing or screwing things together just right so that they don’t fall off.

    Setting Up Apparatus

Pay up $2.49 and download Apparatus from the Google Play store. The current version 1.1 is a 9.5MB download for Android 1.6+. You can enable sound effects and music from the starting screen and get on with the game. One of the interesting features of Apparatus is the Sandbox. We shall come back to it later. For now, let’s take on the levels. You have about 44 of them to go through (and also 10 Christmas level packs as a bonus) and each progressively increases in difficulty.

    apparatus for android

The first level screen looks like this with a few wooden planks, a blue ball, and a goal. The play head button allows you to test and see the success or failure of your contraption.

    apparatus android app

For the uninitiated, there’s the ‘?’ button which tells you about the objective. The instructions are updated with each change in the implements that you get to construct the machine.

    apparatus android app

From there on, it is pretty intuitive. Drag the wooden planks and other building components around using the touchscreen and combine them in interesting by mechanically true ways to move the marble towards the goal.

    apparatus android app

What’s nice about Apparatus is that there’s no time limit. You can take an eternity to complete the puzzles. There are no points or penalties. It is simply a test of logic (and more importantly…patience).

    The Sandbox

The Sandbox is your own Rube Goldberg lab. You can construct intricate machines from a few basic parts and throw it open to other players. There are two types of Sandbox modes – Apparatus and Challenge. The names are self-explanatory.

The Apparatus mode is where you can construct your machines. There is no objective and you are free to construct any machine you so wish to. The idea is to make working ‘prototypes’ of functional machines from the material provided. This is where you can test the laws of physics and see if your wildest mechanical imaginations can come true!

    overpriced gaming pc

The Building Challenge mode is where you create your own puzzles and upload it to the Community and ‘challenge’ them to solve it.

    apparatus for android

The Apparatus website has a gallery of community created models and a few tips to go about it. You can download them to your device and play them as you normally would. The Sandbox and the community levels extend the game beyond the default 44 levels offered by the core game.

Incredibly Simple & Difficult At the Same Time

True. Apparatus tests both your logic and creativity like nothing else. If you are interested in lateral thinking, then this is the game for you. The objective is simple, but the gameplay is not as simple as other gravitational physics based games like Angry Birds Space. Its sibling, Bad Piggies is probably closer in the way it involves construction and ingenuity.

Could Apparatus have done something’s better? Yes; probably a hint system would have helped. It’s really frustrating when one is stuck.

I tried out Apparatus on the relatively small screen of my Sony phone. I would recommend that you try it out on a tablet. Moving the parts around and positioning them precisely becomes much easier on a larger screen. Apparatus finds favorable mention on our Best Android Games page. Does it find favor in yours? Play it and come back to tell us.

RSS And Beyond: The Top 5 Android News Reader Apps For Free

    ">

    January 22, 2013

    By Joel Lee

news readerRSS, which means Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary depending on who you ask, is a popular way to receive news updates from your favorite websites. You can pick and choose which updates you want and they’re amalgamated into a central “inbox” of sorts, allowing you to read your news at your convenience. With smartphones, you can now do all of this through apps.

The convenience of being able to read your selected news sources from anywhere (e.g., waiting in line, when you’re taking public transit, when you’re bored, etc.) should not be underestimated. However, finding the right app for your needs is the best way to maximize your news-reading enjoyment.

Here are 5 of the best FREE news reader apps you can use on Android devices.

    Pulse News

    news reader

What Is It? Highly lauded by publications like TechCrunch and Fortune Magazine, Pulse News is one of the most popular RSS solutions for Android devices. It’s been around for a while and consequently has a ton of features, making it one of the best all-in-one feed and news readers.

The Pros: Pulse News has a beautiful interface that lets you focus on the content at hand. Browsing through multiple articles is easy and everything about the app just feels smooth. You can save articles to be read later, sync for offline reading, discover new publishers, and easily share articles through social media.

The Cons: Some of the settings in Pulse News could use work. Font control is a big complaint as you have to resize the font for each article you read; there is no master font control. Depending on the model of your device, some pages and articles may cause the app to crash.

Overall: There’s a reason why Pulse News has over 10 million installs: it does its job. The small hiccups here and there may frustrate you from time to time, but if you can handle that, this app is a fantastic all-in-one news reader.

    News 360

    free news reader

What Is It? News360 is a news aggregator that pulls stories from over 20,000 sources of news. But on top of just the news, News360 also provides detailed background information through dossiers on the companies and people that make the news, allowing you to see each event from all angles.

The Pros: This app delivers tons of news stories from around the world that can be personalized based on your interests and location through its complex algorithms. News topics range from politics to culture to technology and more. The dossiers in particular are impressive.

The Cons: While the content is good, the presentation has a few flaws. Sorting doesn’t work correctly all the time, which can be a nuisance. Sharing an article links to the News360 cover of it, not the source article. There are also a few bugs that cause the app to crash at times depending on your device model.

Overall: I love the intent behind News360. Being able to compile news from multiple sources AND being able to read about the biases behind each news source is fantastic. If aesthetic issues won’t get in the way of your news reading, I highly recommend this app.

    Google Reader

    free news reader

What Is It? Google Reader is a web-based news aggregator created by, yep, Google. It’s been around for almost a full decade and Google has turned it into something special in that time. It supports Atom and RSS feeds, the two most popular feed protocols. In order to use this app, you’ll need a Google account as this app syncs with it.

The Pros: As with all things Google, the interface is clean and beautiful. Everything is extremely legible, allowing you to consume news articles in peace. The navigation is simple and all of the functions are intuitive; swiping from story to story is about as easy as it gets. This app works well for phones and tablets.

The Cons: It comes with a widget but the widget is a bit buggy. No option for theme control. It isn’t the most impressive or flashy app and it isn’t jam-packed full of neat features. Sometimes it glitches and fails to load an article, but that’s been rare in my experience.

Overall: I love the simplicity and straightforwardness of Google Reader, which is why it is my default reader. If minimalism is what you want, this app will probably suit you. If you want fancy graphics and lots of features, you should look elsewhere.

    Google Currents

    free news reader

What Is It? If the simplicity of Google Reader isn’t enough for you, maybe Google Currents will satisfy. It operates by offering you “Editions,” which are like different magazines within Currents. Editions are all free and come from a variety of sources and publishers, including Forbes, TechCrunch, PBS, and more.

The Pros: Currents has a useful trending feature that tracks the most popular trends in various categories. Stories are brought straight to you, can be saved for offline reading, and are easily shared to friends and social media. Works on phones and tablets. Can be used to read RSS feeds and synchronizes with your Google account.

The Cons: For a mobile app, Currents uses a bit too much memory for my liking. Unless you have a next generation phone, it’ll be bogged down by its many features. Drains power if you use it frequently. Quite lacking in terms of personalization and customization.

Overall: If you have a powerful phone with long battery life and you like eye candy, you’ll love Currents. But while Currents is a fantastic concept wrapped up in a pretty interface, the power drain and memory footprint will be too much for a lot of users. If that doesn’t bother you, then give it a shot.

    Taptu

    news reader

What Is It? Taptu is a self-proclaimed social news feed reader. Its goal is to be the one-stop-app for all of your interests ranging from websites to blogs to social networks. Taptu takes all of them and presents them to you as article streams. Taptu makes it easy to combine multiple news sources of multiple types and view them all in one place.

The Pros: Taptu has their own streams in a number of topics, including news, sports, technology, entertainment, and more. Your streams can be synced across multiple devices. Easily share articles through social media. Import your RSS feeds from Google Reader. Taptu’s widgets give you instant 24/7 access to your streams.

The Cons: Taptu was once completely free, but have since switched to an ad-supported model. Uses a lot of bandwidth due to all the images in social media, but prefetching can be disabled in the settings to lessen the load somewhat.

Overall: Taptu is a great way to bring the modernity of social media right to your device. It looks great, it feels smooth, and it just works. Additionally, the developer of Taptu responds to comments and complaints and quickly pushes out updates for reported bugs.

    Conclusion

If you’ve had any experience with these apps, let us know what you think of them. Are they good? Bad? Did they not live up to your expectations? And if there are any other free news-reading Android apps that you know of, please share them with us.

Bring Back An Old Classic With Pinball Deluxe [Android 2.1+]

    ">

    January 24, 2013

    By Danny Stieben

pinball deluxe androidWhenever I think of pinball, I always think of the Space Invaders version of pinball which was installed by default on Windows XP. It was a fun game to play – and definitely more visually appealing than solitaire – and has therefore become a classic in simple computer games. Now that we’re overrun with mobile devices, there’s a lack of those old classics on these devices.

Pinball is one of those classics that is sorely missed on mobile devices, but thankfully I found a great pinball game that is sure to entertain many who enjoy the game.

    About Pinball Deluxe

    pinball deluxe android

Pinball Deluxe is a game for all Android devices which run on Android 2.1 and above. It has a straightforward implementation of pinball, and offers a large amount of different layouts for your game. The controls are also extremely easy to learn, so anyone who knows the basic controls for pinball can dive straight into the game and rack up points.

Unlike most other games, this one isn’t available for any iOS devices. However, iOS users looking for a good pinball game should check out Pinball Fantasies, as recommended on MakeUseOf’s Best iPhone Games page.

    First Launch

    pinball deluxe for android

When you first launch the game, you’ll be presented with the main menu, from which you can choose to play a game, go through the options, get help with the controls, look at global scores, and exit. When you choose to play a game, you can choose which layout you’d like to play on, and then move on to your game.

In the options screen, you can mainly configure sound settings such as whether it should ask you to turn sound on or off at each startup.

    Gameplay

    pinball deluxe for android

Gameplay is simple, fun, and typical pinball. To start the game, you’ll need to tap and hold anywhere on the screen in order to pull back the spring, and then let go to propel the pinball upward. You can use the entire left and right sides of your screen to control the left and right flippers, respectively. Tilting the game can be accomplished by shaking your device, and you can pause and resume the game by tapping at the top of your screen.

Otherwise, there’s not much to it! Just try to keep the pinball going as long as possible with the flippers in order to rack up the most points, which it does whenever it hits certain items on the playing field.

    Scores

    pinball deluxe android

Whenever you run out of your three lives, the game will end and your score will be posted to your device’s list of high scores if it was high enough. If you connect to the online service, you can also post your scores to the global scoreboard, as well as check on other people’s scores.

    Installation

The game can be easily installed by searching for “pinball deluxe” in the Google Play Store. If you wish, you may also follow this link with your mobile device to go directly to the app in the Play Store, or with your desktop to go to the app’s page, from which you can click on install to remotely initiate an installation of the app on your selected device. The game is only at 14MB, so it shouldn’t take much time to get it downloaded and installed.

    Conclusion

Once I discovered Pinball Deluxe, I fully remembered how much I liked playing those old classic games. While it’s certainly not the most complex game out there, it’s definitely entertaining and will most likely stay that way. If you ever played Pinball in real life or on any other device, give Pinball Deluxe a shot! It’s absolutely free for you to try out and enjoy.

What older, classic games did you enjoy the most? What Android equivalents could you recommend? Let us know in the comments!

Android Tablet for Flipboard is finally here. Here's how it works

    ">

    January 25, 2013

    By Justin pot

flipboard for android tabletThe ultimate Tablet magazine is ready for Android. Flipboard iPad-only offers, long 12-flying-Android Tablet and I've barely put my Tablet since down. Thousands of sites, the ability to pull content in from, you can also access the Flipboard your Google Reader, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook accounts for all of the Web is literally at your fingertips.

As I write this, in General, feel like writing an ad but it would be bad so I just roll with it, this app for my affection is heartfelt. Whatever.

Reading is, for me, the main reason I got the Tablet own one since I've been looking for the best way to read the Web so back in November. My Android news app or try and say such pulses Feedly and have never been impressed by views. Technically still a feedly, beta, constantly crash and mostly just in Google Reader. The pulse, and a variety of sites, but never really love it for some reason. Google Reader app is stuck to the basics.

That is until, Flipboard is found. Of course, the page-flipping is gimmicky, but much more than that, the app said. Let me explain.

    Use the Flipboard

    flipboard for android tablet

When you start the Flipboard box gift. This box can be whatever you want: your Google Reader or an individual in a friend's Facebook page, read the section, your favorite websites. If you look at the contents of the box and as the array, reading a magazine. Sites that you know are as follows.

    flipboard for android

Flip through the pages to search an article or simply click details. Intuitive and truly provides a magazine the Tablet experience. To add the box, click the magnifying glass in the upper right corner.

    flipboard for android

Site menu or use the search, you can browse the site and enjoy about it. Because that's when you may need to click the "account" tab, and things get really interesting:

    flipboard for android

Here at social networking accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Google +, Instagram, etc.) as well as your Google Reader and you can add your YouTube account. Simply put, most of the time online and beautiful interface, you can combine the use of the site.

Better: actually made for Android app is better than browsing these sites using Flipboard. Facebook allows you to flip through the book as a better way to work and I have never enjoyed my YouTube subscriptions search than do in Flipboard. it just works:

    flipboard for tablet

Google Reader works pretty well too. All at once, flip through your feeds or individual feeds or tags of the page box can be added to the main screen of Flipboard. I look at my tags are as follows.

    flipboard for android tablet

It is the most for a service, you can create a custom box is worth noting. People who follow you on Twitter to display photos that are shared by the box? You can do it. Just a box for your favorite channel at YouTube videos? You can do it. Stalking the woman to show status updates in the box? You can, but does not. Creepy. Like adults and talk to her in person.

Personally, I've added to the site, Google Reader, articles you never want to miss, so always he first handed over to the output. As luck would have it, use my tablet on my desktop, Flipboard is kept synchronized with the Web client, read, read articles.

It's a small point but Flipboard seems to think a lot of these minor points. Youtube videos and watching your YouTube account to see in appropriately. All the display at the bottom of the article and the name of the author you are generally right there on Twitter, you can follow them in. The lack of similar apps you'll notice more and more you play with it in Romanian Flipboard.

If you are also a kind of social integration to care about this. As with your Tweets, and article content, do you really want to make that sometimes you had to stay in touch with existing friends and certain kinds of content you share with them. Whatever. There are many other corners of the Web, I love having a way to access all the content like this.

    Get a Flipboard

Check Flipboard out ready for Android? On Google, download it now.

How do you like Flipboard on Android? Let us know in the comments below. And read on Android for a better Web apps don't be afraid to let you know that. I want to learn about it.

MakeUseOf Tests: What Is The Best Android Keyboard?

    ">

    January 25, 2013

    By Erez Zukerman

best android keyboardThe Android keyboard market is a pretty exciting place right now. Where a few years ago typing on a touchscreen seemed like a cumbersome experience marred by repeated tapping and laughably horrible autocorrect, we now get to glide, swipe, and slide our way across emails and other text like never before. Typing on a smartphone has become an almost painless experience – but not all mobile keyboards were made equal.

In this follow-up to our post from 2011 featuring 6+ fantastic Honeycomb keyboards, I’d like to take a good hard look at four of the most popular and well-regarded sliding keyboard. Call it a “keyboard death match” if you’re feeling particularly nerdy today. To test all four Android keyboards, I’ve picked the  same text and swiped it out without making any corrections. Let’s see who’s the most accurate – It’s science!

    My Test Paragraph

Below is the original paragraph I will try swiping through with each of the keyboards. It comes from a short story called Kings by Travis S. Taylor, part of the Baen Free Library.

They stood below him, ready and willing – in fact anxious – to give their lives for the Emperor. Abhir felt calm and confident as always and definitely looked the part of the Emperor of the Universe. The Corps of Seven stood firmly behind him in their smart golden uniforms. Abhir stood straight, ran his fingers over his long white hair and then straightened his golden Corps insignia band. The insignia bore a man holding seven suns in his right hand and wielding a brilliant shining sword before his face as if he were poised to kiss it.

I picked this paragraph because it contains just a single proper name (which every sliding keyboard is bound to stumble on), and no technical jargon. So, it’s a bit like an ordinary email, if you happen to be talking to someone about the Emperor of the Universe. After typing it up with each keyboard, I will show you the differences between the original and the keyboard output. I will be using DiffChecker, a tool we reviewed here, to make the comparison.

The rules, in brief: Only sliding (no tapping at all!), NO correcting any errors, NO manually selecting alternatives suggestions, NO manually capitalizing anything, NO being over-careful and watching every word. Just casually swiping without over thinking it.

    Native Android 4.2 Keyboard

    best android keyboard

Claim to fame: Comes with Android… if you’re cutting-edge enough.

Getting it: You need to install an Android 4.2 ROM, or another ROM that has it enabled. It’s not on Google Play (like most of our contenders really).

Using it: In terms of user experience, this is a very solid keyboard. It feels fast, and the text prediction bubble moves along with your finger as you type (so it’s always literally at the tip of your finger).

Test results: They aid below him, ready and willing – in fact anxious – to giver their lubes for the emperor. Abut felt calm and confident as always and definitely looked there Lafferty of the emperor of the universe. The corps of seven sod firmly behind him in their smarty golden uniforms. Abhor sod straight, ran his fingers over hodge lung white hair and then straightlaced gird golden Corot’s insignia bang. the insignia bore a man golfing seven find in hid right hand and wielding a brilliant shining sword before hits face add if he were passed to kiss it.

    top android keyboards

Bottom line: Woah, “give their lubes for the emperor”? Really, Google? But that amusing mistake is far from the only one, as you can see from the colorful diff output above. The Android 4.2 keyboard missed obvious words like “stood,” repeatedly substituting “sod” for it.  Note however that most of the text is correct, which is impressive given the crazy pace at which I was swiping.

    SwiftyKey Flow Beta

    top android keyboards

Claim to fame: A powerful predictive text algorithm, combined with swiping.  On paper, this should make for a killer combo.

Getting it: At the time of this writing, you can grab it from the SwiftKey Flow Beta page.

Using it: These days, SwiftKey flow is actually my keyboard of choice. Its predictive algorithm really does work well (or maybe I’m just a repetitive guy, always writing the same things). It’s quick and responsive, and makes it easy to type numbers and other non-alpha characters.

Test results: They sod belle him, Ray and willing – in fact anxious – to give their lives for the emperor. About felt calm and confident as always and definitely liked the past of the emperor of the universe. The corps of seven stood firmly being him in their smarty golden uniforms. About stood straight, tan his fingers over good long white hair and then straightened good golden corps insignia bang. The insignia bite a man holding seven duna in his right hand and wielding a brilliant sword before his face add if he was passed to kiss it.

    top android keyboards

Bottom line: They sod belle him, indeed. In all fairness, though, it must be said I did not use SwiftKey Flow’s crowning feature, its powerful predictive text engine. As are the rules, I never once paused to look at what I was typing and pick an alternative. In general, there seem to be less differences, indicating better accuracy. Also, maybe “smarty golden uniforms” is just a thing – Google and SwiftKey seem to agree on this one.

    Swype Beta

    top android keypad

Note: This isn’t Swype’s default skin, but it’s bundled with it.

Claim to fame: Well, it’s Swype, duh! What more do you want? Seriously though, Swype is one of the most-hyped Android keyboards of all time, and was there before SwiftKey Flow and the Android 4.2 keyboards joined the sliding-text party. Also, it features a powerful speech recognition engine made by Nuance, the same guys behind the epic Dragon NaturallySpeaking for PC.

Getting it: Some phones come with Swype, but for the actively-developed Beta, you’ll have to go to the Beta page. Thankfully, you no longer need to register for an account to get it, which is nice.

Using it: Quite frankly, Swype feels a bit slow on my Galaxy S III. Maybe it’s how it draws the trail behind my finger as I glide across the screen, but there’s something sluggish and tired about it. On the plus side, Swype makes it easy to capitalize words without hitting the Shift (just glide up beyond the keyboard’s top border). If you’d like to read some more about using Swype, check out my Swype Beta review (although some of my complaints have already been addressed in this current version).

Test results: They stood below him, ready and willing – in fact anxious – to give their lives for the emperor. Angkor felt calm and confident add always and saintly looked the past of the Emperor off the Universe. The Corps of Seven aid firmly behind him in their smart golden uniforms.website stood straight, ran his fingers over God long while hair and then staggered good Golden Corps insignia band.the insignia bite a man holding seven suns in his right hand and wielding a brilliant shining sword before his face as if he were posed to kiss it.

    top android keypad

Bottom line: Swype’s results seem roughly on par with SwiftKey’s, both eclipsing the native Android 4.2 keyboard. One unfortunate flaw is that Swype doesn’t automatically add spaces following periods, resulting in quite a few needless errors (recognition was fine, but the dot messed it up). Also, “website stood straight” – we at MakeUseOf care greatly about the posture of our website, so that’s good.

    SlideIT

    top android keypad

Note: This isn’t SlideIT’s default skin, but it’s bundled with it.

Claim to fame: You can just get it. No Beta, no installers, nothing shifty like that. Go to Google Play, pay up, and download. (Yes, it’s not free)

Getting it: Couldn’t be simpler: Google Play.

Using it: I’ve reviewed SlideIT back in 2011, and it hasn’t changed much since. It’s a nice keyboard, but it won’t blow you away with a speech recognition engine, powerful predictive algorithms, or even a word hovering at your fingertip. It’s here to get the job done (and it’s up to you to choose a skin nicer than the default).

Test results: They stood before, Rafi and willing -in heavy anxious -to ground their motives for three emperor. About felt calm and confident add amounts and definitely looked the past of the emperor odd the universe. The curious odd seven stood firmly behind him in their smart golden uniforms. Abroad stood stair, ran good fingers over goes Ling white hair and then good golden corps imaginings band. The indigenous view a man holding seven suns in his right hand and wielding a brilliant shining sword before his face as if he eye passed to kids it.

    best android keyboard

Bottom line: Oh no, such a disappointment. Rafi, in case you were wondering,  is an Israeli name (short for Rafael). SlideIT disappoints with a significantly worse result than either Swype or SwiftKey Flow, virtually coloring the diff with errors. “To ground their motives for three emperor” – when recognition errors are so thick and heavy, you might not even remember what it was you were originally trying to write when the time comes to proofread (you do proofread, right?).

    Bottom Line

SwiftKey Flow and Swype win! To pick between the two, you’ll have to consider which extra feature is more important for you: Text prediction or speech recognition. I’m going to stick with SwiftKey Flow because it makes it easy to switch between languages (no need to press-and-hold anything).

If you have an Android 4.2 phone, you can definitely use the native option for a while, but it’s almost certain you’ll get better results with either of the free Betas. Sadly, I would be hard-pressed to recommend  SlideIT at this point given the state of the competition, but future versions may surprise us yet.

And one final disclaimer: This test was not scientific by any stretch of the imagination. You are more than welcome to repeat it yourself and report your results in the comments. What’s your Android keyboard of choice, and why?

extreme road tripSometimes, play the game on your mobile device when you just want instant gratification-you don't need a lot of time thinking and sensory stimulation, but it's still a couple of games and I want to get the play to kill a session. A handful of games that can do this, but it is not as simple as a game of extreme travel.

Master Keyboard Shortcuts in Windows with KeyRocket

AppId is over the quota AppId is over the quota

Master Keyboard Shortcuts in Windows with KeyRocketRecently, I shared an easy way to learn your Mac keyboard shortcuts by using the Mac app Hotkey EVE. I love the app so much that I began searching for a similar app for my Windows PC. I’m now more productive on my Macbook Pro, but I wanted to be more productive on my Windows desktop too.

Luckily, I came across KeyRocket, a Windows application that teaches you shortcuts. KeyRocket learns how you work and will show you keyboard shortcuts for actions that you perform regularly with your mouse. Once you’ve learned a shortcut, KeyRocket will stop recommendations for that actions.

Here’s how to get up and started with KeyRocket.

    1. Download the Windows application from the KeyRocket website and install it on your computer.

    2. Go through the 5-step tour that shows you the basics of KeyRocket. As you’ll see, you can just continue working after installation and KeyRocket will start doing its thing automatically.

    Go through the KeyRocket tour.

    3. Whenever you want to access KeyRocket’s options or exit, you just click on its icon in the Notification Area. Clicking the icon will also give you access to the Shortcut Browser.

    4. The Shortcut Browser lets you see available shortcuts for specific applications on your computer. You can also search for shortcuts, by using the search bar.

    5. Clicking on the wrench icon at the top the Shortcut Browser gives you access to a few other options. For instance, you can choose to hide learned shortcuts, and also hide unassigned shortcuts.

Access the Shorcuts Browser to view and search through shortcuts.

    6. Unfortunately, I noticed that four of the five applications that you can view shortcuts for are locked; you have to upgrade your KeyRocket account to access all four of them. Those four applications are: Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, and Word.

Unlock one free application in KeyRocket.

    7. However, on step 4 of the tour, you can choose to unlock one of those four applications for free; Windows Explorer will become unlocked once you finish the tour. Luckily for me, I don’t use Microsoft Office; I use LibreOffice and Google Docs for my document needs. So, I don’t need any of those other four applications.

Learn the Windows 8 keyboard shortcuts with KeyRocket.

That’s all there is to KeyRocket. You’ll get desktop notifications as you’re going about your daily business and tasks. One of the best things about KeyRocket is that it’s a great way to learn all of the new shortcuts for Windows 8, since there’s so many of them!
